The Center for Minority Rights Development (CEMIRIDE) was co-founded by Dr Korir Sing'oei, the late Adam Hussein Adam and Nyang'ori Ohenjo, the current chief executive. A non-profit making organization, CEMIRIDE was established in 2001 to strengthen the capacities of minorities and indigenous peoples (pastoralists, forest peoples and fisher communities) to advocate for their rights in Kenya. The establishment of CEMIRIDE was informed by the denial of citizenship rights for the Nubian community to which Adam belonged. Having been born in Kenya and attending Kenyan schools through to university, Adam would still be denied a Kenyan passport and as a result missed so many opportunities. Adam's predicament was a manifestation of the discrimination and violation of the Nubian rights to citizenship. CEMIRIDE was thus established to bring the conversation of the existence and violation of the rights of minorities and indigenous peoples in Kenya and explore redress mechanisms especially with the Kenyan government.
